COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This three-day course is designed for crime scene investigators, detectives, crime laboratory analysts and others in the field of forensic science that are routinely called to testify in court. This class will be interactive and challenge students to think of possible mind provoking court scenarios. Methods of how to make a positive first impression will be presented along with how to overcome any anxieties the student may have about presenting in court. Preliminary information such as a proper pretrial checklist will be presented as well as a discussion on how to handle adversity from attorneys both during direct and cross examination that will help better prepare the individual on how to handle these potentially difficult situations. Both verbal and non-verbal communication techniques will be reviewed and depending on the audience a discussion on how to present technical information to a lay audience may be discussed. The Frye and Daubert standards for expert testimony will also be covered as well as a list of difficult questions encountered in court along with possible answers. The third day will be very interactive and the students will be placed in groups and asked to testify in a moot court scenario.
